Flute

Katherine DeJongh Flute, is on the faculties of CIM, The College of Wooster, and the Interlochen Arts Camp. She attended the Interlochen Arts Academy, received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Illinois and a Master of Music from CIM, Her teachers include Jeffrey Khaner, Timothy Day, and Mary Kay Fink. Ms. DeJongh holds the position of principal flutist with the Canton Symphony and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus. She has performed as soloist throughout the United States, in Europe, the Middle East and South Korea. Concerto appearances include the Polish National Chamber Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, National Repertory Orchestra, Olsztyn State Symphony, Shenandoah Symphony, Canton Symphony, and Wooster Symphony. Ms. DeJongh has performed as a recitalist in the United States on such series as the Cultural Center of Chicago for the Dame Myra Hess series, the New York Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Stan Hywet concert series in Ohio. She has presented master classes and performances at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, the Cairo Conservatory in Egypt and at various conservatories in South Korea. She has participated in festivals including the National Repertory Orchestra and the Music Academy of the West, (where she appeared as a soloist with orchestra) and the Aspen Music Festival. Ms. DeJongh's recordings include her most recent CD for Centaur Records, Twentieth Century Works for Flute and Orchestra; a CD for Koch International featuring Concerto No. 1 for flute and orchestra by Krzesimir Debski; Chindee, showcasing flute and harp chamber music; several CDs as a member of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, including a commission of Michael Daugherty's Tell my Fortune, which features a movement for flute and alto flute with orchestral accompaniment, and a soon-to-be-released recording of the double-concerto for flute and violin by Yenn Er, Shangshui. Ms. DeJongh is a clinician/educational consultant for the Conn-Selmer Corporation, representing Armstrong and Emerson flutes. She was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1994. E-mail

Kyra Kester Flute, received a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from CIM as a student of Jeffrey Khaner and Mary Kay Fink. She is in her 17th season as second flutist with the Canton Symphony Orchestra and has been a member of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra since 1999. In 2004, Ms. Kester won a one-year position as second flute with the Akron Symphony. She has performed with the Wheeling Symphony, Youngstown Symphony and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also had solo appearances with the Canton Symphony Orchestra in their Cameo Concert Series in 2005 and with the Blossom Festival Band in 2003. Ms. Kester formerly served on the faculties of the Cleveland Music School Settlement and the Beck Center for the Arts. She was appointed to the CIM faculty in 2006.

Laura Orazi Flute. B.M., Flute Performance and Music Education, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music; M.M., Flute Performance, Saint Louis Conservatory of Music; doctoral studies in Early Music, CWRU. Teachers have included Jacob Berg, Bernard Goldberg, Kyril Magg, and Sandra Miller (baroque flute). Former teacher at the Cleveland Music School Settlement and the St. Louis Conservatory and School for the Arts. Additional training in Orff Schulwerk. Appointed to CIM faculty, 2000.

Linda White Flute. B.A. The University of Wyoming; M.M., The Cleveland Institute of Music. Flute studies with Jeffery Khaner and Dr. Katherine Kemler. Member of the Trinity Chamber Orchestra. Performed with the New World Symphony, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, Canton Symphony, and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus. Solo appearances with the Ohio Chamber Orchestra and Trinity Chamber Orchestra, as well as numerous orchestras in the Rocky Mountain region. Has appeared throughout the U.S. and Canada at several international festivals with guitarist Steven Aron. Appointed to faculty, 1993.

Oboe

Courtney Miller Courtney Miller holds a Masters degree in Oboe from The Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with the highly renowned and influential oboist John Mack. Before attending The Cleveland Institute of Music, Ms. Miller attended Florida State University where she received a Bachelor in Oboe Performance and a Certificate in Church Music. At Florida State University Ms. Miller studied with the highly regarded oboe pedagogue and performer Eric Ohlsson. Ms. Miller has also studied or performed in Master classes with Elaine Douvas, Linda Strommen, Jeff Rathbun, Frank Rosenwein, Robert Walters, Eric Olson, Richard Woodhams, Alex Klein, Joseph Robinson, Jeanette Bittar, and Richard Dallessio. Ms. Miller made her orchestral debut at age 17 as soloist with The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in 2000 as a result of winning both the Concert on The Green Concerto Competition and The Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. In 2003 Ms. Miller won The Triennial National Performance Scholarship sponsored by Sigma Alpha Iota (A Professional Music Fraternity) and as a result performed a recital at their National Convention in the summer of 2003. Ms. Miller is a member of The Canton Symphony Orchestra. She is also an active performer with many other orchestras throughout Ohio: City Music Cleveland, The Akron Symphony, The Erie Philharmonic, The Toledo Symphony, Red: An Orchestra, The Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Miller teaches oboe at The Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Department.

Clarinet

Louis Gangale Clarinet/Saxophone. B.M.E., Baldwin-Wallace; M.M., The Cleveland Institute of Music; Doctor of Musical Arts studies. Has performed and toured with The Cleveland Orchestra; currently performs with the Cleveland Ballet Orchestra. Also has performed in solo concerts and with chamber orchestras throughout Ohio and neighboring states. Recently presented clarinet program for Rainbow Series of The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. Has performed in recital at Cleveland State University and regularly performs with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and the Ohio Chamber Orchestra. Primary studies with Theodore Johnson at The Cleveland Institute of Music; also studied with Stanley Hasty and David Shifrin. Fluent on all members of the clarinet family as well as saxophone. Currently on the faculty of Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University. Appointed to faculty, 1976.

William Tennant Clarinet/Saxophone; Music Theory. B.M., Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music. M.M. in music education, The University of Akron. Director of Instrumental Music, Saint Dominic School. Former Principal Clarinet, Valley Festival Orchestra. Principal teachers include Mitchell Fadem, clarinet and saxophone; Kris Belisle and David Bell, clarinet; James Feldman, Lawrence Hartzell, and Warren Scharf, Theory; Loris Chobanian, Composition; Robert Jorgensen, Laurie Lafferty, Gene Milford, David Newell, and Ann Usher, Education. Students consistently receive superior ratings at OMEA and GCC adjudicated events. Former students on scholarship at leading conservatories and universities across the country. Previously listed in the National Dean's List, Who's Who, and a recipient of the All-American Scholar award. Professional affiliations include the Music Educators National Conference, Ohio Music Education Association, Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, National Eagle Scout Association, Mu Phi Epsilon, and the Omnicron Delta Kappa honorary, among others. Mark DeMio Bassoon. B.M., A.D., Cleveland Institute of Music. Currently a member of the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Trinity Cathedral Chamber Orchestra, Trinity Chamber Players, Akron Symphony, Youngstown Symphony, Erie Philharmonic. Trumpet

Loren Toplitz Loren Toplitz Trumpet. M.M., Cleveland Institute of Music. Recipient of the Bernard Adelstein Prize in Trumpet Performance from CIM. B.M., The Juilliard School. Winner of the Juilliard Community Service Fellowship. Principal teachers include Michael Sachs, Philip Smith, and Chris Gekker. Member, Akron Symphony Orchestra and Lancaster Festival Orchestra. Has played with numerous orchestras throughout the region, including The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Pops, Cleveland Opera Orchestra, Columbus Symphony, Canton Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, Chautauqua Symphony, as well as the Buffalo Philharmonic and the New World Symphony. Performed with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra and in Carnegie Hall as Principal Trumpet of the New York String Orchestra. Soloist with the Canton Symphony Chamber Orchestra and Chorus in a Cameo Concert, held at the Cultural Center for the Arts in Canton, Ohio. Featured performer with Concertante, a chamber ensemble based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Has performed with The Pointer Sisters, Peter Cetera, Wynona Judd, and Kenny Loggins. Can be heard on recordings with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Akron Symphony, the Summit Choral Society, the Cleveland Pops, and the Lancaster Festival. Loren has performed with numerous music festivals, including the National Repertory Orchestra, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Chautauqua Music Festival, and the Baldwin-Wallace Bach Festival. Appeared on Public Television's "Reading Rainbow" and was heard on National Public Radio's "Performance Today." Former faculty member at the International Music Festival held at Baldwin-Wallace College. Appointed to CIM faculty, 2002.

Horn

Rebecca Miller McGown Becky Miller McGown, horn, joined the Cleveland Institute of Music preparatory division faculty in August of 2008. Ms. McGown holds a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music where she was a student of William Purvis. She also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with Richard Solis. While at Yale, Ms. McGown participated in a variety of musical outreach programs in the New Haven (CT) public school system. With the Yale Philharmonia, she performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City and at Symphony Hall in Boston. Ms. McGown has also performed with the New England Symphonic Ensemble in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Brazil, Argentina, and the U.K.. Ms. McGown currently freelances in the Cleveland area. She has recently performed with the Cleveland Pops and the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her music, Ms. McGown enjoys reading, running, hiking, and skiing.

Percussion

Paul Yancich Co-Head, Timpani and Percussion Department, has been principal timpanist of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1981. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from CIM as a student of Cloyd Duff and Richard Weiner. Before his Cleveland appointment, Mr. Yancich served as the timpanist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and on the faculty at Georgia State University. Mr. Yancich has given master classes and recitals in the U.S., Europe, Asia and New Zealand. He performed as timpani soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra for the world premiere of James Oliverio's Timpani Concerto #1. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1981.

Brian Sweigart Dalcroze Eurhythmics, recently received a Master of Music degree from Youngstown State University. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from CIM in Dalcroze Eurhythmics and percussion, and attended Interlochen Arts Academy in high school. He has taught Eurhythmics at many schools in Cleveland, including CIM and the Cleveland Music School Settlement. He also teaches preparatory percussion lessons at CIM. Mr. Sweigart was appointed to the CIM faculty in 2006.
